1. Marco Polo
Who hasn’t heard of the Italian Merchant, Explorer and Writer, Marco Polo? The American TV series features the adventures of this renowned explorer. It is set in the 13th century Mongolia in Kublai Khan’s court. It takes you to a world full of greed, betrayal, sexual intrigue and rivalry, making this series an interesting one to watch.
2. Poldark
A British Historical Period Drama, Poldark is based on the novels of the same name by Winston Graham. Ross Poldark returns to England after fighting in the American Revolution. Cut to the drama, he finds that the woman he was supposed to marry is engaged to his own cousin, his father is dead, and the property he inherited is slowly deteriorating. Watch this show to find out how he tries to rebuild his life and of course, with that premise, you can expect a lot more drama!
3. Reign
Reign is a historical drama series which tells of the rise to power of Mary, the queen of Scots. What sets this show apart is that Mary, who arrived in France as a 15-year-old girl married to Prince Francis, is actually attracted to people of the same sex. While we do have a lot of shows depicting same-sex love stories now, however, it would be interesting to see it from the historical perspective. Watch this show to see Mary share her experience with spirituality and explain how it is possible for others like her to be happy within the confines of Catholicism.
4. The Borgias
Set around the 16th century, the series follows the Borgias (family of a prominent Italian cardinal and military leader) as they try to control the Roman Catholic church. With the help of his son, Rodrigo Borgia uses bribery to secure his position as Pope Alexander VI, but he has a few of his own enemies plotting against him. Murder, intrigue, war and marriage alliance, the Borgias are willing to do everything it takes to get what it wants, and we suggest you do whatever it takes to watch this series! You will thank us for this one!
5. The Tudors
The Tudor dynasty is one of the most famous in history. For the unaware, it was the English royal house of Welsh origin and had 5 monarchs between 14th & 16th century. This historical fiction TV series centres on this Renaissance Dynasty under the reign of King Henry VIII, with the vicious Cardinal Wolsey as his advisor and his search for a way to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon to make Anne Boleyn his wife. Definitely sounds like an intriguing plot, doesn’t it?
6. Versailles
The most interesting of the lot, Versailles is set during the construction of the Palace of Versailles during the reign of King Loius XIV. When he commissions Versailles, the nobles seek entry into the lavish residence, which they do not realize is meant to imprison and control them. The series also shows his queen Marie Theresa trying to win back from his mistress, the English king’s sister. Love, power, betrayal and war are all part of daily life in Versailles, making this show a must-watch for you all!
7. Victoria
Who doesn’t want intel on the British Royals? While most of us would’ve watched The Crown, and if you are one of those who enjoyed it, you should definitely also check out Victoria! Based on the story of Queen Victoria — how she rose to the throne at the tender age of 18, her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert. This series will offer you insight into the life of the form Queen of the United Kingdom. And come on, at the end of the day we all want to know how the royals loved, don’t we?
8. Vikings
This one is based on the life of Ragnar Lothbrok, a legendary Norse hero, also known as the greatest hero of his time! The series follows his journey as a mere farmer, who rises up to become a heroic warrior and commander of the Viking tribes. And we’re sure the plot of a simple farmer turning into a warrior would have definitely made you curious! This series is an utterly raw and befitting representation of the Viking era. It should definitely be on your list of shows to watch!
