In the second decade of the 21 century with seven billion people spread across each and every corner of the globe, it is perhaps next to impossible to discover any new place on earth. The mind is the musician, the body is the instrument and breath is the tone. Play well and engage in skillful techniques to enhance your well-being. This quote is from one of my all time favorite yoga teachers, Nevine Michaan. Every Wednesday I would make the effort of travelling for upto 60 minutes on the subway just to take her hour long Pranayama class and two hour asana teacher’s class. It was the highlight of my week. I honestly felt “high”, happy, euphoric every time I could spend those 3 hours with Nevine.

What is Yoga? How do you define it? A New York...

It’s funny every now and then I still get asked that question from someone who is brand new to the practice. “Is it exercise?”, “Is it spiritual?”, “Is it difficult?” “Do I just lie there and relax?” ”Do I have to be a pretzel?” are some of the phrases I might hear from a beginner or outsider. I can define it in a very simple way by saying “yoga means to unite or join”. In the practice we are uniting our mind and our body through our breath. There are so many different forms and styles of yoga and some classical forms of yoga don’t involve any asana or postures but at the base of each one of them is the sense of union. We practice to bring our mind, body and soul together to achieve a state of balance and inner peace.

Managers, Are You Always Too Available?

Sometimes, it is important not to be too available, on purpose. For example, in a study at a printing company, Michigan State’s Fred Morgeson and colleagues found that when teams lacked clear feedback and information systems, giving them autonomy led them to expend more effort, use more skills and spend more time solving problems. Numerous other studies have shown that allowing employees to exercise choices about goals, tasks, work schedules and work methods can increase their motivation and performance. This was another lesson on the importance of balance in the everyday life of any manager working with people

Do Startups Need Marketing? HELL YES Advertising? Not Really

Marketing is for companies who have sucky products. If you build something that is amazing, people will adopt it because it is amazing. And you won’t have to do much marketing, at least at the start. I can promise you this is just plain wrong. I am close friends with the founding team of Flipboard and have watched the company grow at every stage of its development. If you think their marketing had nothing to do with their success, I am sure the company would be thrilled, but that is a truly naive assessment.

Additionally, this April, the UK nicely graced us with almost as many holidays as Americans get in year (thank you Will and Kate). When I was an investment banker, I used to sit in my office day dreaming of the next holiday. I had each and every travel site bookmarked and my delightful travel agent, Roy, on speed dial.
