What do you see in the picture above? No, that’s not a painting by Picasso or Da Vinci! That is the majestic Hutt Lagoon aka ‘Pink’ Lake in Australia. Sometimes bright bubblegum pink, sometimes lilac, and occasionally even red. That’s how you can describe the extraordinary waters of this lagoon, lying in the mid-west region of Western Australia.
The Hutt Lagoon is a salt lake located near the coast, just north of the Hutt River. It is among the most picturesque locations you can ever visit! Also known as the Pink Lake, it draws visitors from near and far and astounds onlookers with its vivid waters. Here’s everything you need to know about this dreamlike, grammable lake.
But where does it get the colour from?
The Hutt Lagoon boasts of a pink hue due to the presence of the carotenoid producing algae, Dunaliella salina, which serves as a source of beta-carotene, used as a food-colouring agent and source of vitamin A. in cosmetics and supplements. You’d be surprised to know that the lagoon contains the world’s largest microalgae production plant. How? Well, it has a series of artificial ponds spread over 620 acres which are used to farm Dunaliella salina. Also, you can see its vibrancy changing with the time of the day and the seasons! Now, if you don’t call that a miracle of God, we don’t know what is!Â
The Hutt Lagoon was named by the explorer George Grey
Following the Indian Ocean Drive from Perth, you can reach Hutt Lagoon in just six hours
However, a scenic flight from Geraldton ( a coastal city in Australia) is what will give you the most unique view, with the Indian Ocean creating a striking contrast with the Pink Lake. Nestled between the Hutt Lagoon and the beach, you’ll find the picturesque fishing village of Port Gregory. If you are inspired to plan a trip to see the Pink Lake, Port Gregory with its farm stays, chalets, beach cottages and the caravan park will be perfect for your overnight stay!
It truly isn’t hard to see why people love Hutt Lagoon so much. You’re sure to double-take when you see the lake for the first time – it is absolutely unreal! The Hutt Lagoon is mesmerising year-round. So, whenever you visit Australia’s coral coast you must drop by the pink lake as well!
