If you’re a Hollywood movie buff, the picture above would definitely remind you of the last scene from Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence starrer, Passengers. You know, the same one where they both are long gone, but leave behind a lush, green space ship full of natural flora! Well, even though it may seem like it, but no, this ain’t a screen grab from that. In fact, this is an actual indoor waterfall inside Singapore’s Jewel Changi airport! At 130 feet i.e, 40 meters high, The Rain Vortex is one of the major attractions at the airport’s recently opened Jewel terminal. Read on to know more mind-blowing details about the structure!

All about Jewel Changi at Singapore

Located inside Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore, The Rain Vortex waterfall is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, standing 40 meters i.e. 130 feet in height. The airport recently (in April 2019) opened a lifestyle hub, called Jewel, and this waterfall is one of the major attractions there.

There’s a 10 level dome built around the Rain Vortex which sends water falling from 40 meters above. With more than 2000 trees, 100,000 shrubs and plants, and at least 280 retail stores, restaurants and bars located throughout the indoor jungle, this majestic AF ‘lifestyle hub’ inside the airport is a sight to behold! In fact, it in itself has become a destination for travellers!

Who designed it?

The complex is designed by Safdie Architects along with Mott Macdonald. The Rain Vortex itself is the work of Californian company WET. They also designed the famous water features at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

In fact, you’d be surprised to know that the water at The Rain Vortex is supplied by harvested rainfall. About 10,000 gallons of water per minute gets pumped through and the is re-used in the installation! Whether you are travelling to Singapore or just waiting inside the airport for a connecting flight, it is worth seeing!

What not to miss

A light and sound show projected through the sheet of water is another huge attraction here. The show here starts from 8:30 PM lasts till 12:30 AM daily at hourly intervals. Apart from The Rain Vortex, at Changi Airport there are plenty of things to look at! You can visit the largest Starbucks store in Singapore, first Pokémon centre and Canopy Park which is a recreational wonderland that lets you play and dine under the glass canopy.
