We observe June as pride month to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall riots at the Stonewall Inn in New York City. This was a gathering space for individuals in the LGBTQ community during the 60s. On June 28th, 1969, the police raided the Inn. While it was common for the police to crack down on Gay Bars and Pubs in big cities, this was the first time that the same-sex patrons objected against it and fought back! This incident was the turning point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. The turmoil lasted for three days and put Gay rights on the world map.
How did the pride celebrations start?
The movement led to the formation of associations such as the Gay Activists Alliance and the Gay Liberation Front, which held protests, met with political leaders, and disrupted public meetings and events to hold leadership accountable.
‘Mother of Pride’ Brenda Howard organised the first pride parade a year later to observe the first anniversary of the Stonewall riots. In 2016 the area around the Stonewall Inn, which is still a popular destination for the LGBT community, was designated a national monument!
What is Pride month all about?
To understand and recognise the impact that the LGBT community had around the world, many pride events such as pride parades, marches, parties concerts, workshops and conventions etc. are held during this month.

With the dissolution of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, decriminalising the LGBTQ+ community, this year for the first time, India is celebrating International Pride month with the classic celebratory parades, celebratory messages on social media platforms and the embassies in India waving the rainbow flag.
Not only that, India’s leading online sexual and reproductive health information platform, Love matters has launched its campaign #Agartumsaathho. It will celebrate Pride for an entire week from June 10th to June 16th. The platform will display stories of support and acceptance that people have received or extended towards members of the community!
This makes us super proud and we are glad to see that our country has come such a long way. So lets all together take part in celebrating the ones who are out and proud. And even the ones who are still not out but are proud because after all, Love is Love!
